daycare_1St. Mark’s Preschool & Kindergarten provides a supportive community within which young children expand their learning and development. We view children as feeling, thinking, creative, and growing individuals. At school, children move into a miniature version of the larger society where they have an opportunity to test themselves and to develop in a supportive environment. Children are encouraged to become problem-solving, sensitive, contributing, and responsible members of the “school community” as initial preparation for adulthood in a complex society.

The curriculum at St. Mark’s is child-centered and focuses on thematic units and plays a dynamic form of learning that involves a wide range of intellectual, social, emotional, and physical capabilities. The creative arts and play activities throughout the school day provide opportunities for the total development of the child. The curriculum encompasses a wide variety of experiences that are based on an understanding of child development and which support and expand each child’s development.

Our program is based on the work of Piaget, Vygotsky, Bev Bos, The Reggio Emilia Approach and other child development theory. We consider it to be a developmentally appropriate program for young children. A developmentally appropriate program as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children is one that is planned and carried out based on a knowledge of how children grow and what they can do—socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically at each stage of development. Children learn new skills and develop special interests as they take on typical growth tasks at each stage of life. In addition to having their own individual timetable of growth and development, each child brings his/her own special interests, life experiences, strengths, and needs.

Our program is also age-appropriate, as it takes into consideration the normal sequences of growth typical of children within a given age group. Our teachers understand that young children are active, social individuals who have lots of ideas they want to share. Preschoolers are busy developing friendships and they benefit most when offered a variety of activity choices, such as dramatic play, block building, art, toys, puzzles, exploring sand and water, cooking, music and movement, and a rich and ever changing selection of wonderful books to read.

We believe early education should be relevant, meaningful and fun! Early learning is accomplished by providing a safe environment that inspires the natural curiosity of children and encourages the exploration of their world through different types of play.

daycare_3Since 1984, Sunshine School has loved and educated 3-, 4-, and 5-year old children in the northwest Tucson neighborhoods. We are a group of educators who offer children a wide array of activities in the areas of cognition, social development, and life skills. Classroom and centers’ lessons are taken from our curriculum but presented to suit the needs of individual children. Visits from guest teachers (with lessons in science and Spanish and vocal music and dance, etc) provide Sunshine with an environment rich in educational opportunities. Adults and children work and play and share conversations together. Our goal is to develop competent children who are ready to leave Sunshine with confidence and creativity and respect for one-another.

The philosophy of The Sandbox Early Childhood Learning Center concerning early childhood education has developed gradually, affected by knowledge and tempered by experience. We hope that our philosophy is reflected in the quality parents find in the program. Our concern is with the whole child—the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical child.

WE BELIEVE that children are born with a need to belong—first to a family, then to a school, a community, and the world. Belonging is sharing emotions, being accepted and comforted. It includes being part of a cultural tradition and accepting the cultural traditions of others. It is sharing a part of ourselves and our families, our homes, and our cultures. The Sandbox Early Childhood Learning Center wishes to create such preschools for children.

WE BELIEVE that children learn through play and hands-on experiences. We believe that children should “get messy” in their play. We believe that children, when provided with a variety of age-appropriate choices within an enriched environment, will learn through discovery, invention, and experimentation. We believe that children learn through play within a well-planned and enriched environment. They do not need to always produce a specific product or a right/wrong answer; we focus on learning and enriching a child’s life. We believe that pretend play enlarges a child’s view of the world, reflecting a child’s inner, creative self, and increases social and emotional and cognitive skills. Our environment helps children learn to make choices and to assert themselves appropriately within relationships. They are encouraged to celebrate differences, voice their opinion, and respect the opinion of others. We want our children to discover for themselves those activities and peers they most enjoy, encouraging socialization but not demanding it. We help and encourage children to resolve conflicts, stepping in only when necessary.

The Sandbox Early Childhood Learning Center environment emphasizes self-regulation, trust, and respect for fellow classmates and staff. Each child is given the opportunity to develop his or her own potential at his or her own pace.

Our Mission

International School for Peace promotes peace within the individual, the community and the world by immersing children in languages and multicultural experiences through play-based, anti-bias curriculum that celebrates diversity.

The International School for Peace is a non-profit preschool that opened in August 2004 with a focus on peace and conflict resolution. By immersing the children in multicultural language and culture experiences, International School for Peace promotes peace within the individual, the community, and the world.

Unique Programming

International School for Peace offers play-based full and partial language immersion preschool classes in Spanish. Our partial immersion classrooms provide English instruction (70%) with Spanish language enrichment activities (30%). Our full immersion classes are taught in Spanish. Children in all classrooms receive exposure to the language through songs, games, and cultural activities. Conflict resolution skills are used every day.

The International School for Peace offers a play-based, child-centered, multicultural, anti-bias curriculum. We promote and celebrate diversity in our school, community and world through stories, books, games, songs, cultural artifacts, and visual materials that positively depict all races, cultures, ages, physical abilities, religions, socioeconomic status, and family configurations without stereotyping.

Spiritual Focus

International School for Peace has an ecumenical, non-denominational spiritual focus emphasizing the commonalities of all world religions, especially in the areas of friendship and peace.

International School for Peace will foster peace and understanding through the sponsorship of public festivals that celebrate diversity through food, dance, music, and storytelling from around the world, and works in partnership with St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church.
